Adkins was raised by a single mother in various working-class neighborhoods of London. She was a lover of contemporary pop songs when she was a kid and was capable of playing the guitar and clarinet. It wasn't until she was in her teens when she was introduced to Etta James, a blues and rhythm singer, as well as other performers from the 20th century's mid-century, when she began to think about a career in the field of music. While she was being trained in a secondary school for performing arts that was funded by the federal government and a friend began posting songs Adkins wrote on Myspace. Adkins was soon noticed by record companies and signed an agreement with XL Recordings in 2006.
